At Schwartz International we spend our days deep in complexity.
Our clients all have one thing in common: their lives and businesses cross borders. That might mean ownership of foreign companies, foreign bank accounts, international mergers and acquisitions, or being the U.S. subsidiary of a foreign parent. With those facts come international tax rules, cross-border payments, withholding obligations, and compliance regimes that carry punitive penalties if they’re misunderstood or ignored.
This is serious work. The stakes are real.
Many of our clients are accounting and law firms around the world whose own clients need international tax guidance. Others are U.S. accounting firms without deep international tax resources, and we have the privilege of serving as their international tax department. We are genuinely grateful for that trust. It’s not something we take lightly.
But after nearly 30 years of doing this work for Marc, 50 for Paul and 12 for Charles, we’ve learned something that no statute, regulation, or treaty can teach.
Technical excellence matters—but how you show up as a human being matters just as much.
When we disagree, we come prepared—with the technical support, the reasoning, and the experience to explain our position. But just as important, we’ve learned how to disagree without being disagreeable. Dialogue, communication, and mutual respect are not soft skills in this work—they are essential ones.
As International Tax Nerds, we try—both in our firm and in our lives—to move beyond labels and assumptions. Without proselytizing or preaching, we believe compassion matters. Listening matters. A willingness to engage with one another as people—regardless of politics or perceived differences—matters.
That philosophy shapes how we work with clients.
We strive to truly know the people we advise. Not just their entity charts or transaction flows, but their lives, their families, their goals, and what’s important to them as human beings. Cross-border tax issues don’t exist in a vacuum—they affect real people making real decisions under real pressure.
We are grateful for every client and every professional partner who trusts us with that responsibility. And we are grateful for the relationships—many of which have grown into friendships—that make this work meaningful beyond the technical challenges.
International tax may be complex. The world may feel divided.
